Typical Bed and Breakfast Roles

The recruiting requirements of a bed and breakfast vary based on its size and offers. The innkeeper is in charge of managing the day-to-day operations of the bed and breakfast, including staff management, logistics, and guest interactions.

Because food is such an essential element of any bed and breakfast, one of the first positions you may need to fill as your company grows is that of a cook or chef to assist in the kitchen.

Housekeepers, groundskeepers, and maintenance workers are examples of additional positions that may be required. Depending on the size of the company, some of these positions may be part-time.

Innkeeper

The innkeeper (often the establishment’s owner) oversees day-to-day operations and frequently lives on-site.

Chef

A chef in a bed and breakfast may be responsible for a variety of tasks. Some chefs just create meals as specified, while others manage all aspects of the kitchen.

Housekeeper

A housekeeper cleans guest rooms after each visit and maintains the bed and breakfast’s communal spaces. Vacuuming, sanitising, dusting, and making beds are examples of duties.

Maintenance

A maintenance/groundskeeper is responsible for the upkeep of the bed and breakfast’s appliances, painting, and landscaping. This duty is sometimes done by the innkeeper or hired out.

Tips for Finding a Bed and Breakfast

Hiring staff may seem to be a stressful procedure, but it does not have to be. We divide the procedure into four fundamental steps: (1) Planning; (2) Recruiting; (3) Interviewing; and (4) Hiring. Here are some pointers for each stage of the procedure.

Prepare to Staff Your Company

The ambiance of a bed and breakfast is critical to its success, and it is impacted as much by the location and design as it is by the personalities of its personnel. Look for personnel that have attitudes and dispositions that complement the bed and breakfast’s character and ambiance.

Most of these duties may be done by the innkeeper alone if the bed and breakfast is small enough (many bed and breakfasts only employ an innkeeper). However, as the company expands, the first outside aid most innkeepers hire is someone to help with cleaning. Another important early hiring is a chef to handle the kitchen and ensure that visitors have delicious breakfasts.

Create a Recruiting Strategy

As the company expands, innkeepers will often add personnel gradually, and the recruitment process is similar to that of other service-industry occupations. Job advertisements on websites such as Indeed.com or Monster.com are effective; but, a community approach with flyers displayed throughout town might offer promising local results. There are also various websites specialised to bed and breakfasts that include employment boards, although these listings are usually reserved for innkeepers and assistant innkeepers.

Interview with assurance

If you take your time throughout the planning and recruiting stages, you will most likely end up with a large number of competent individuals.

Nonetheless, it is normal for a new company owner to feel nervous when employing personnel for the first time. Remember that the interview is just an opportunity to get to know a candidate and provide them with information about the position and the company. Also, keep in mind that they are probably far more frightened than you are!
