The Use of AI in Legal Practice and its Impact on Clients

Feb 6, 2023

   Muhammad Arooj

The legal industry is not an exception to the widespread revolution that artificial intelligence (AI) is wreaking throughout many other sectors of the economy. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in several facets of legal practise, such as document analysis and legal research, is already having a substantial influence on clients. In this article, we will discuss the usage of artificial intelligence (AI) in legal practise as well as the influence that it has on clients.

Document review is one of the primary areas where artificial intelligence is being used in legal practise. In the past, reviewing papers was a process that required a significant investment of time and work. Frequently, attorneys were required to read hundreds of pages of records. The development of document review systems driven by artificial intelligence, on the other hand, has made this process far more effective. AI is capable of analysing and classifying massive amounts of documents in a fraction of the time it would take humans to do so, freeing up attorneys’ time to concentrate on more important and valuable work.

Legal research is another part of the practise of law that is beginning to include AI. Legal research tools that are driven by artificial intelligence can efficiently search through massive volumes of legal material and give appropriate results in a matter of seconds. It is possible for attorneys to save time as a result of this and give their clients with legal knowledge that is more accurate and up to date.

Clients have also been significantly impacted as a result of the integration of AI into legal practise. For instance, document review and legal research tools driven by AI may assist to minimise the cost of legal services since they are able to execute jobs more quickly and accurately than people. This may result in decreased legal expenses for clients and make legal services more accessible to those who may not have previously been able to pay them.

AI is not only helping to lower the cost of legal services, but it is also helping to raise the bar for those services’ overall quality. Tools that are driven by AI are able to examine huge volumes of data in order to discover patterns and insights that people may not instantly recognise. This may assist attorneys in making judgements that are more well-informed and in providing their clients with improved legal counsel.

Nevertheless, the use of AI in the practise of law presents certain valid problems. When some functions in the legal industry are taken over by AI, one of the primary worries is the possible loss of employment in the area. Although AI is capable of completing jobs more quickly and accurately than humans, it also has the potential to displace human employees, which would result in a loss of employment opportunities. This is a challenge that has to be solved so that the advantages of AI in legal practise may be appropriately distributed among all of the relevant parties.

One further thing to worry about is the precision and dependability of the AI-powered tools. Although artificial intelligence has made considerable strides in recent years, it is still a long way from being flawless, and the results it produces always have the possibility of including flaws and biases. Therefore, it is essential for attorneys to exercise caution when utilising tools powered by AI and to double check the accuracy of the findings obtained from using these tools before making significant choices.

In summation, the use of AI in legal practise is having a substantial influence on clients, offering advantages such as lower legal costs and increased quality of legal services. AI is also having a positive impact on the quality of legal services overall. However, in order to guarantee that the advantages of AI are appropriately distributed among all relevant stakeholders, it is necessary to address issues such as employment losses and the veracity of the findings produced by AI. It will be fascinating to see, as AI continues to make strides forward, how it continues to revolutionise the legal industry and the influence it has on customers.

At the same time, the requirements of customers have evolved as a result of their search for legal services that are both more productive and less expensive.
