When purchasing and selling products and services, knowing how to draft a receipt is essential. Begin on the right foot by using our General Receipt template.

You want to rule the corporate world, make difficult decisions, and get to the top of the food chain. All of that is excellent, but before you can dominate the corporate world, you must first master the fundamentals. One of the most crucial things to know when you’re buying and selling products and services is how to draft a receipt. With that in mind, we thought we’d help you out by providing a General Receipt template so you can get off on the right foot.

Make a list of each party.

Whether you’re on the purchasing or selling end of a transaction, the first step is to make a list of everyone involved. Of course, the phrase “receipt” should be at the top, followed by the seller’s information such as name and/or business name, contact information, and any other important facts. Similarly, you must provide any pertinent information on the buyer. Finally, make a note of the transaction’s date and potentially the time (depending on what’s being sold).

List the Transaction Specifics

The next stage is to provide as much information on the items or services as feasible. Make a detailed inventory list, including the number of products, their condition, and the amount paid for them. A decent receipt should also indicate the payment method. Payments made by check should contain the check number, whereas payments made by credit and/or debit card should include the card type, the last four numbers, and, in certain cases, the security code. You should also provide the number of payments received and if the item was picked up or delivered. If you have paid in full, your receipt should indicate that.
