Taking Medical and Family Leave

Feb 10, 2023

Employees have the right to take time off work for certain health concerns and caregiving duties under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Employees were given the ability to take time off to connect with a new child, care for a family member with a terrible health condition, or recuperate from their own bad health condition when the legislation was first approved in 1993. Employees may now seek FMLA absence to deal with specific practical concerns resulting from a family member’s deployment or to care for a family member who is gravely wounded while serving in the military, as the statute was amended in 2008.

This section’s articles outline employee rights and responsibilities under this essential federal statute. They also give information on state family and medical leave laws, which are often more favorable than the federal FMLA requirements.
