A legal retainer is an agreement where a client pays a lawyer an upfront fee for future legal services. The lawyer sets this money aside and then bills against it as they work on the client’s case. There are two types of retainers: classic retainers (non-refundable) and security retainers (client funds held in trust that are billed against).
