Crime in other countries may be far more difficult to deal with than crime in the United States. The visitor may be uncomfortable with the language, location, or culture of the area, and sadly, many individuals target tourists because they are financially secure and out of their comfort zone.
If you become a victim of a crime while traveling abroad, call the closest US Embassy or Consulate right once. Consular officials are ready for emergency assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The US Embassy may help crime victims in a variety of ways. They can replace a lost passport, contact relatives and friends, and get medical assistance. They may also assist you in clarifying the local criminal justice system and gathering facts about your case. The embassy can assist you in obtaining local and US information on victim compensation and in locating an appropriate counsel.
The embassy may be tremendously useful, but it has restrictions. They are not permitted to investigate crimes, offer legal advice, or defend you in court. They cannot also cover your medical expenditures or translate or interpret for you.
After notifying the embassy, you may need to call the local police to report the crime and for extra help.
