1. Organize yourself
2. Provide specifics

3. Be truthful

4. Request clarification
5. Keep them updated

We understand. Nobody likes to speak with attorneys. But, whether it is good news (marriage) or bad news (divorce), everyone will need to contact with a lawyer at some point in their lives. When that time comes, there are a few things you should keep in mind to make the legal procedure as easy and painless as possible for both you and your lawyer.

But hold on! “Is not that what I pay my lawyer for?” you may be wondering. Not exactly. Consider the following: Consider experiencing a toothache. (ouch). Naturally, you would see your dentist, who would ask a few conventional questions such as, “Where does it hurt?” or “What medications have you been taking to relieve the pain?” Consider answering all of those questions with “I do not know.” It may seem unusual, but attorneys are similar to dentists. Or, in fact, like any expert who attempts to assist you in helping yourself. Without your direction, they can only accomplish so much. It needs a group effort.

Though attorneys are, by definition, well-versed in the legal environment, you must give background information (details, first-hand stories, papers, etc.) so they can easily navigate the long and winding legal route without making anybody sick along the way.

So, are you prepared to meet with your lawyer? Here are five pointers to help you have a good time and (hopefully) a successful result.

1. Organize yourself

Try to provide a whole account about your predicament. For example, if it is an event-related occurrence (such as a traffic citation), make sure you write down everything that happened, from beginning to end, in chronological sequence. Make a folder for all essential legal papers. Make a list of the witnesses on the scene. Just do not overwhelm your poor lawyer with information that has to be sorted through.

2. Be specific.

At first glance, seemingly insignificant things such as the weather may seem dismissible. However, every detail counts in the eyes of the law; every circumstance has the ability to enhance your case. And, because your lawyer will not be following your every step (we hope! ), it is your obligation to be your lawyer’s eyes and ears, ensuring that they have a complete (and, most importantly, accurate) picture. Give facts (names, dates, and particular situations) and factual information to create that crystal clear picture.

3. Be truthful

Simply said, do not lie. Keep in mind that you and your lawyer are both on the same team. Unless you grant them permission, your lawyer cannot disclose sensitive material with anybody. When you start ignoring crucial details or adding fictional material to your tale, it will only backfire. Prepare to tell your lawyer everything, both good and negative. This will allow them to provide you with the finest information and counsel available.

4. Request clarification

It is normal to be perplexed by all the legal jargon you hear. The law may be perplexing, and now is not the time to make educated guesses or pretend to comprehend legalese. Simply inform your lawyer, and they will try their best to explain everything in layman’s terms. Getting a clarification or two may go a long way toward putting your mind at ease—and helping your lawyer handle your case better. It is your and your lawyer’s responsibility to thoroughly understand your legal status.

5. Keep them updated

Things will inevitably alter. And when they do, you must notify your lawyer. Each little item or event may have a significant impact on your legal standing, for better or worse. Some legal matters may take longer to settle, so remain in touch with your lawyer when new relevant developments emerge.
