Codicils are a simple method to modify your Will. Continue reading to learn how to utilize a codicil.

You may desire to amend some of the terms in your last will and testament after signing it. One option is to draft and sign a new will that incorporates the modifications you want. Another option is to update your will with a codicil. A codicil is merely a document that begins with a reference to your original will and then explains the modifications, often by laying down substitute paragraphs for the sections you wish to amend.

The codicil must be signed using the same procedures as the original will and should be maintained alongside it. Your “will” now includes your original will as well as the codicil.

Codicils are often used primarily for small adjustments, such as adding the name of a new executor to replace a previously specified executor who has died. If you wish to make significant and/or many modifications to your last will and testament, it may be better and less complex to just draft a new will and testament.
